wow...5cm per Second Oukashou

Dattebayo got me on this one... I'd just found out from my brother that Naruto wouldn't be airing til March 15th. So I did a double take. What did I download that was labeled Naruto Shippuuden 5cm? So I watched it, and true enough it was a different anime. But the animation was so breathtaking I couldn't stop watching...

Byousoku 5 Centimeter: Oukashou

Subtitled "A chain of short stories about their distance," It is a actually made up of 3 movies: this one, the first episode, Okasho, shows the day of their reunion. In the next part, Cosmonaut, the story about Takaki after the reunion takes place from the viewpoint of another person. The last episode, Byosoku 5 centimeter, clips out the movements of their thoughts
[5cm- supposedly sakura petals fall at the rate of 5cm per second]

Byousoku 5cm is the story of two separated friends, Takaki and Akari. They are soul mates who find a way to keep in touch by writing each other letters (which sets the very touching and melancholic tone).

25 minutes into it and I was already in love with the characters. Takaki sets out to be reunited with Akari for just one night. *sob* (you can imagine the conflicting joy and sorrow that will play out in those scenes). Anyway, this has rekindled my love for romance/drama anime, I am prepared to shed a few tears...

As you can see from the screenshots the animation is amazing and the music beautiful (theme song "One more time, One more chance" by Yamazaki Masayoshi. But the best part was when I personally moved by its simple and raw plot. (and this coming from the someone who stays away from the drama genre). It seems director Makoto Shinkai will not be adding the usual elements of fantasy but focus on depiction of real life, successfully achieving his theme of separation and distance through the narrative style...

Will their love fade with time? Or can they be reunited again after losing your soul mate not once but twice? Damn it, when is the next part out?... Now THIS is anime.

(Dattebayo I forgive you for not giving me my naruto fix this week. It seems fake publishing does pay off lol. I honestly enjoyed this one. Hats off to you.)
